Speech: JD Vance Holds a Midterm Political Rally in Kinston, North Carolina - October 28, 2026

12:00 AM
JD Vance 00:00:00-00:00:26 (26 sec)

How are we doing, North Carolina? Well, before -- ladies and gentlemen, thank you all so much for that amazing North Carolina welcome. I think while I'm in town, I'm going to get some Smithfield's barbecue. I still miss it. I still miss it, and before we get started, I've got to thank a few patriots who call this state home.

JD Vance 00:00:26-00:01:08 (42 sec)

I've got to thank them for hosting us. But most importantly, I've got to thank them because they fight for the people of North Carolina every single day. First of all, Congressman Greg Murphy. Next, the amazing NRCC chairman, Representative Richard Hudson. Richard, good to see you, man. And most importantly, last but not least, two incredible candidates you're about to send to join them in Washington: the amazing Laurie Buckhout and my dear friend, the great Michael Whatley.

JD Vance 00:01:08-00:01:41 (33 sec)

You know, coming to North Carolina, I can't help but think about how good this state has been to me. Aside, of course, from the great state of Ohio, I have spent more of my life in North Carolina than any other. And I know we are not far from the place that made me the man I am today.

JD Vance 00:01:41-00:02:09 (28 sec)

We are close to MCAS Cherry Point, and I'm proud of all the Marines out there. You know, while I was stationed at Cherry Point, I met some of the most decent, the hardest-working, the smartest, the most impressive people that I have ever known, men and women who were good to a Marine a long way from home and who treated me like I was one of their own.

JD Vance 00:02:09-00:02:32 (23 sec)

And I've got a lot of good Marine Corps stories. Perhaps my favorite is when I went to go and buy my first automobile and I went to, you know, one of these used car dealerships right off base. And the dealer was going to offer me the low, low interest rate of 21.9% to a young Marine to buy his first car.

JD Vance 00:02:32-00:02:58 (26 sec)

And I didn't know anything about money or finances; I was a 19-year-old kid who didn't know what he was doing. So, I'll never forget, I went to a Marine Corps gunnery sergeant, and I said, "What do you think about this?" And he said, "JD, number one, you're an idiot. Number two, why don't you not go to the used car dealership credit union? Why don't you go to Navy Federal just down the road?"

JD Vance 00:02:58-00:03:20 (22 sec)

And he saved me from what would have been the first major financial disastrous decision I had ever made. But, you know, those Marines, and not just the Marines, but the community that supported those Marines, the community that we're in today, they made sure to teach me a number of most important lessons. Of course, a little bit about used cars and finance.

JD Vance 00:03:20-00:03:46 (26 sec)

But also, as you all know, that vinegar barbecue is the very best anywhere in the United States of America. I will say not -- not all -- not all of the lessons took, ladies and gentlemen. So, I was reminded, I bumped my finger on the way down here. And if the folks in the media can see here, they can see that I still have a giant blister on my finger.

JD Vance 00:03:46-00:04:10 (24 sec)

People always ask me what it's like to be the vice president of the United States, and I'll tell you a little story, because about three or four days ago, I was hanging out with my kids and my kids, you know, we were playing with fireworks. And my kids said, "Well, what would happen if you took one of those fireworks and, instead of dropping them in the tube, you just kind of let it explode?"

JD Vance 00:04:10-00:04:32 (22 sec)

And what I should have said as their father is, "We're not going to find out." But what I did in fact say is, "I don't know, let's see." [Laughter] Now, like a good father and a good Marine, I did make sure that my kids were behind a tree very, very far away. But what happened, as kids sometimes do, is one of them popped out from the tree.

JD Vance 00:04:32-00:05:00 (28 sec)

And so, I couldn't just drop it, so I had to make sure they got back behind the tree. And anyway, long story short, I burned the hell out of my finger. It still hurts to this day, and I bumped it on the way out here and I was like, "Oh, man," and that was because of that burn. So, now normally, the one thing I'll say, a downside about being vice president is that when you do something stupid like that and you're not vice president, then you're just like -- you kind of deal with it, maybe you take some ibuprofen.

JD Vance 00:05:00-00:05:17 (17 sec)

But because I'm constantly surrounded by people, there were like 35 Secret Service agents and about 25 staffers who knew what a dipshit I was. [Laughter] And they're all coming to me with burn cream and medicine and all these other things. Again, that's the benefit of being the vice president of the United States.

JD Vance 00:05:17-00:05:37 (20 sec)

But the downside is that I now have 60 people who know -- and now I've got about 500 more beyond that -- who know that I should not be trusted with fireworks. So, as much as I love the Marine Corps, ladies and gentlemen, not all of the lessons take. That is the point of that story. But -- [Audience member calls out, "But we love you anyway."]

JD Vance 00:05:37-00:06:04 (27 sec)

Thank you. But when I -- but when I think about the kindness that the people of North Carolina showed to me, you know, none of them had to do that. They did it because I was a Marine, because they were proud of me and because I was their fellow citizen. And to them, that was reason enough to treat me like their own.

JD Vance 00:06:04-00:06:33 (29 sec)

And I think about those North Carolinians often because they understood something that Washington, D.C., spent 40 years forgetting. And that being an American means something, and North Carolina deserves leaders who will never let Washington forget it. Now, this community knows that. You know that being an American means something.

JD Vance 00:06:33-00:06:57 (24 sec)

And where I grew up, we knew it, too. Ohio is very far from North Carolina in many ways, but it's very similar in the ways that matter right here, in the heart and in the spirit. And I've got to tell you a little bit about growing up, because as a kid, I remember this feeling that the people in Washington had forgotten about people like us; they had forgotten about people like me and my family.

JD Vance 00:06:57-00:07:39 (42 sec)

I remember driving around with my grandfather. He was a union welder at a Middletown steel mill, and he still, even 10 years after he retired, he could show me the cars that were made with American steel, and he would beam with pride when he did so. I remember playing peewee football in leagues where the children of working-class Black families and the children of working-class white families would play football together, would cheer with one another, would never worry about the color of their skin or who had more privilege, because we recognized that all of us were privileged to live in the United States of America.

JD Vance 00:07:39-00:08:38 (59 sec)

You know, I remember 25 years ago, a little over 25 years ago, just after 9/11, that sense -- remember this, that sense of pride and unity and fellowship that we had in this country. Remember how everybody had an American flag on their house the day after 9/11? Not because anybody asked us to, but because we loved our country and we wanted everybody to know it. And then I remember what happened after, of course, when kids from towns like ours, from this one, from Middletown, Ohio, from countless small towns all over the United States of America, we lined up to serve in droves because our love for the United States of America reached to our very bones.

JD Vance 00:08:38-00:09:09 (31 sec)

And in its moment of crisis, we signed up to serve it. Now, I didn't think about this then, but I think about it a lot now, because being from somewhere and belonging to the people around you is a blessing. And as I got older, I spent a lot of years wondering why so many of the people running this country stopped believing in that.

JD Vance 00:09:09-00:09:35 (27 sec)

Over time, to the people in charge, America stopped being a nation of people; it became a universal globalist empire. That's what they tried to do to us. Our capital became not just America's capital; it became the world's capital. And our leaders tried to administer a globe full of 8 billion potential citizens.

JD Vance 00:09:35-00:10:06 (30 sec)

But they forgot that they were meant to fight for the citizens who were already in the United States of America. Now, to those people, the only thing that distinguished you and me from all the people who wanted to come here was a piece of paper. "Why make things in the United States of America," our leaders asked, "when our fellow world citizens in Vietnam or in China could do the exact same thing?"

JD Vance 00:10:06-00:10:40 (35 sec)

Besides, they'd grow out of poverty and become democracies as a result. So, it was actually a good thing that we were shipping American jobs to places that didn't care about the American nation. Why invest in stopping crime and cleaning up our streets, or in taking care of Americans in need? You know, the NGOs and the globalists told us that the most effective altruism wasn't helping our neighbors; it was sending our money overseas to build anywhere but right here at home.

JD Vance 00:10:40-00:11:13 (33 sec)

And then they would ask us, "Why police who gets to become an American at all?" The mouthpieces of big business and the Wall Street Journal called for open borders and the free movement of labor. Liberal politicians pushed to make every state and every town a sanctuary state and a sanctuary city. And here in North Carolina, you had politicians like Roy Cooper tell state police to stop enforcing the law. [Audience boos]

JD Vance 00:11:13-00:11:51 (38 sec)

Now, if you question like I did, or like you did, this new arrangement, you got called some names. You got called an isolationist or a protectionist or a racist. People said that we had economic anxiety as if we had a mental disorder rather than a love of the United States of America. And if you noticed the cheerleaders of this new way of governing our country, they started policing the way that we spoke about their failures.

JD Vance 00:11:51-00:12:16 (25 sec)

You weren't supposed to say "illegal immigrant" anymore; that became "undocumented immigrant." And some in Washington go further today: you have Democrats who speak of, quote, "undocumented Americans," and you have Democrat presidents banning words like "assimilation" inside of their own administrations. That's what they did in the last administration.

JD Vance 00:12:16-00:12:41 (25 sec)

So, it's not any surprise, ladies and gentlemen, that we stopped assimilating; we opened up our borders; our nation invited entire communities of criminals into the United States of America, and we asked nothing of somebody who wanted to become an American. The generosity of our people -- ladies and gentlemen, it was our finest qualities.

JD Vance 00:12:41-00:13:07 (26 sec)

It was the best thing that we had. And eventually our very leaders used it as something to be abused and weaponized against our own people. We turned a blind eye to new arrivals as they raided Medicaid and food stamps and grew rich off of our kindness. And you know what the casualty in all of this has been?

JD Vance 00:13:07-00:13:58 (51 sec)

Trust. Our trust in our leaders, our trust in our nation. A government that answers to the whole world, ladies and gentlemen, it was never going to answer to you. So, we stopped trusting it. And my friends, I can't say that I blame you one bit; they didn't deserve our trust, they didn't earn our trust and they lost it. But there's good news to that story because in 2024, you, ladies and gentlemen, did something about it. North Carolina, you sent a message to Washington that we are sick of being ignored, we are sick of being left behind, and we are going to put America first for a change.

JD Vance 00:13:58-00:14:34 (36 sec)

Ladies and gentlemen, at our hearts, this movement is about restoring the sovereignty of the American people: the idea that the people's government belongs to the people, not to lobbyists, not to bureaucrats, not to foreign money and not to illegal criminals who have come into this country without the sanction of our people.

JD Vance 00:14:34-00:14:55 (21 sec)

Every single day, ladies and gentlemen, remind yourself of what we are fighting for. We are fighting to preserve the jobs of our neighbors and the dignity of the people who grow our food, of the people who fight our wars and of the people who build the things that keep the United States of America afloat.

JD Vance 00:14:55-00:15:33 (39 sec)

They are who we're fighting for, and let's never forget about it. But so much has changed over the last two years. We've got to remind ourselves that we inherited the worst inflation crisis in half a century in the United States of America. We inherited a nationwide surge of violent crime; we inherited an open border with drug cartels walking right through it. But under President Trump's leadership, all of that has changed.

JD Vance 00:15:33-00:16:13 (40 sec)

For years, think about it, politicians in Washington, they talked endlessly about tax cuts, but working people rarely seem to get much out of it. But last year, President Trump cut taxes for actual working Americans for a change. We ended taxes on overtime, we ended taxes on tips and we ended taxes on Social Security because we believe you ought to keep more of your money.

JD Vance 00:16:13-00:16:41 (28 sec)

We took that money away from the bureaucrats and the fraudsters, and we put it back in the hands of the American people who keep this country running every single day. Now, of course, we believe that sovereignty starts when you control more of your own money, ladies and gentlemen, but it doesn't stop there.

JD Vance 00:16:41-00:17:13 (31 sec)

Remember, for too long, our grandparents and our parents and ourselves, we paid sky-high prices for medicine, while European nations freeloaded off of the innovation that was created in the United States of America. Now, I remember one of the best examples of sovereignty I have seen in the past two years is when Donald J. Trump hauled those pharmaceutical companies into the Oval Office and he said, "How dare you charge Americans more than you charge Europeans?

JD Vance 00:17:13-00:17:46 (34 sec)

You've got to treat our people fairly for a change. You know, the president has empowered me and the team to cut down on visa fraud and fight against anybody who would lay off an American worker and replace them with a low-wage foreigner, for the simple reason that American jobs ought to go to American citizens, and that's what we're doing.

JD Vance 00:17:46-00:18:07 (21 sec)

We have fought for the sovereignty of every American citizen to control your streets, because we believe that every American child, whether they're rich or poor, whether they're Black or white, they should be able to walk to school or they should be able to go to a community park without their parents worrying about their public safety.

JD Vance 00:18:07-00:18:55 (48 sec)

That's why we back the blue and go to war on criminals. And that's also why, ladies and gentlemen, on day one, we closed the border and went to war against the drug cartels. We took them on, and we have had zero illegal border crossings since then. We banned Wall Street and foreign investors from buying up American homes because if sovereignty means anything, ladies and gentlemen, it means that American homes and American farmland ought to go to American citizens.

JD Vance 00:18:55-00:19:32 (37 sec)

And we have ended the tyranny of DEI. We have ended the tyranny of racial discrimination in jobs and universities, because we believe that we treat every American, rich or poor, Black or white, as common citizens, not as members of racial groups. And we also believe that nobody, none of us, can be truly free when their government cares more about dividing us up by skin color and pitting us against each other.

JD Vance 00:19:32-00:19:59 (27 sec)

In this movement, ladies and gentlemen, we don't hate anyone because of skin color. The government has been trying to sell that crap for far too long, and we put an end to it as soon as Donald J. Trump became president. I've got a mosquito flying around up here. I don't know if you can see it. I think it's a drone paid for by Chuck Schumer and the Democrats.

JD Vance 00:19:59-00:20:38 (39 sec)

I didn't know -- I didn't know they had that technology, ladies and gentlemen. But in less than a week -- feels like the election is a ways off. Ladies and gentlemen, in six days, you have an opportunity to vote for North Carolina patriots who believe in real sovereignty. And I want to say -- and I've got to say a word about two men who have devoted their careers to putting America first: Greg Murphy and Richard Hudson.

JD Vance 00:20:38-00:21:02 (24 sec)

The far left has fired up this year, ladies and gentlemen, and they would love nothing more than to take out leaders like these two. And my message to the far left is we are not going to let them. North Carolina, are we going to send Greg and Richard back to Washington to finish the job? Damn right we are.

JD Vance 00:21:02-00:21:39 (36 sec)

But they need reinforcements. They need -- as much as we love the Marine Corps here in eastern North Carolina -- we need, I think, an Army colonel who has served at the very highest levels. We need Laurie Buckhout to send to Washington, D.C. Now we've got to beat up on her opponent a little bit, because Don Davis is the kind of Democrat who talks one way at home and then goes right back to Washington and does something totally different.

JD Vance 00:21:39-00:22:11 (32 sec)

When we ended taxes on tips, on overtime and on Social Security, Don Davis voted no. When we fought to close down the border, Don Davis voted no. When we fought to eliminate fraud and return $250 billion to the American people, Don Davis fought us every single step of the way. So, when we go and vote in just six short days, do not vote for Don Davis, the far-left Democrat who bends the knee to Nancy Pelosi.

JD Vance 00:22:11-00:23:07 (56 sec)

We are going to send Don Davis back home and send Laurie to fight for us. But now I've got to talk about a man that is going to make a great United States senator for the people of North Carolina. Give it up for Michael Whatley. Now, Michael is as North Carolina as it gets. I got to know him, as a matter of fact, when he ran the RNC, and I saw up close what he's made of. He built the operation that put our country back in the hands of the American people in 2024, and he's going to do it again in 2026. Now, Michael could have stayed in Washington.

JD Vance 00:23:07-00:23:39 (32 sec)

He could have collected a very fat paycheck as a lobbyist working for corporations instead of you. But instead, Michael did the hard thing; he came home because he believes that this state deserves a senator who answers to North Carolina and nobody else. At his heart, Michael is a fighter. He helped elect the Congress that cut your taxes and secured your border.

JD Vance 00:23:39-00:24:12 (33 sec)

And every single day in the Senate, Michael is going to fight to put North Carolina first, and he's going to do it with safer streets; he's going to back the blue; and he's going to keep on lowering taxes for working families in the state of North Carolina. Which brings us to the man who's standing in his way, your former governor, Roy Cooper. [Audience boos]

JD Vance 00:24:12-00:24:42 (31 sec)

My friends, I want you to think about, in the most fundamental terms, what your government owes you. You hire these people, and Roy Cooper's record in North Carolina is of a man who does not work for you but works for the far-left activists. Roy Cooper swung open your prisons during COVID; he released thousands of dangerous inmates out early, hundreds of whom went right back to hurting or even killing innocent Americans.

JD Vance 00:24:42-00:25:30 (48 sec)

Now, when Roy Cooper said that it was dangerous to keep prisoners in prison because of COVID, why wasn't he thinking about the fact that it was dangerous to release prisoners onto the streets of North Carolina? It was a disgrace, ladies and gentlemen, and Roy Cooper is the author of it. Roy Cooper, remember that beautiful girl in Charlotte, North Carolina, a Ukrainian refugee, a woman who came to the United States of America to escape war, and she found a war, not in the streets of Ukraine, but on the streets of Charlotte, North Carolina.

JD Vance 00:25:30-00:25:59 (29 sec)

A vile criminal, a man who had committed multiple felonies, a man that Roy Cooper let out of prison again and again and again. He was an animal, and he treated that innocent girl like she was nothing. You look at her eyes, you look at her pleading with this man, "Why did you do this to me?" And you realize that all of our violent crime comes from a very small part of our population.

JD Vance 00:25:59-00:26:46 (47 sec)

And at some level, you need leaders who can accept the reality that when you have a person who would do that to an innocent young woman, he does not deserve to be on the streets; he deserves to have his ass in prison forever. And if he would, she'd still be alive. When your legislature passed a law requiring sheriffs to work with ICE and other federal law enforcement, Roy Cooper vetoed it. When your legislature passed a law to fight back against voter fraud, Roy Cooper vetoed it. He has vetoed every effort to keep criminals behind bars.

JD Vance 00:26:46-00:27:22 (36 sec)

And, you know, one of the things that I'm proudest of is that, under President Trump's leadership, we have got violent crime to a 126-year low. We have got murders as low as they have been in the lifetime of any American citizen. That's an amazing testament to what presidential leadership can do. But when Roy Cooper had the opportunity to stand up to the far left and go to war against the criminals, what did he do? He bent the knee.

JD Vance 00:27:22-00:27:45 (23 sec)

So, I'd ask you very simply: Don't judge Roy Cooper by his slick TV commercials. Don't judge Roy Cooper by what he says six days before an election. Judge Roy Cooper by what he did when he actually had power over your lives. And when Roy Cooper had power over your lives, he let criminals run roughshod over the state of North Carolina.

JD Vance 00:27:45-00:28:17 (32 sec)

Let's send him a message on November the 3rd: We're not having it, North Carolina, and we're kicking this guy out of Washington. My friends, look, what we want out of our government is not complicated. What we want out of our country is not that difficult. I want something simple -- I want for your family what I want for the four beautiful kids that I have with our lovely second lady.

JD Vance 00:28:17-00:28:44 (27 sec)

I want them -- I want them to go to schools that educate them instead of indoctrinate them. I want them to be able to walk down the street in safety. I don't want you to have to be a rich person who can afford a security detail in order to enjoy comfort and security in your own neighborhood. If you're willing to work hard and play by the rules, I want you to have good and dignified jobs.

JD Vance 00:28:44-00:29:15 (31 sec)

And I want you to know that when the government reaches its hand into your pocket, it's going to pay for the things that it should; it's not going to give the money to fraudsters. I want your police officers to know that we're going to empower them to put bad guys behind bars. I want to send a message to the business community that if you're willing to work with us and invest in American workers, we are going to be your biggest champion.

JD Vance 00:29:15-00:29:47 (32 sec)

But if you want to ship American jobs overseas, then we are going to fight you tooth and nail because American jobs ought to go to American workers. These are not complicated things. And when I think about growing up in Middletown, Ohio, the grandson of a union steelworker, raised by my grandparents because my parents struggled in all the ways that you've probably heard and read about.

JD Vance 00:29:47-00:30:21 (34 sec)

My mom struggled with addiction, and so she wasn't able always to take care of me. But I'm standing here before you with a beautiful wife, four beautiful kids, the vice president of the United States, because the American dream is still alive. But I don't just want the American dream for me or for my generation; I want it for you, and I want it for the generation that comes after us. I want young people to be able to afford a home.

JD Vance 00:30:21-00:30:55 (34 sec)

I want my kids to raise a family in a country that is vibrant and thriving and free and prosperous. I want the simple things, ladies and gentlemen. I don't want the government to do everything for me. I don't want the government to be my nanny. I don't want it to take care of me. I just want my government to fight for my jobs, to fight for my safety and, because I want that for me, I want it for you, too.

JD Vance 00:30:55-00:31:18 (23 sec)

But we're not asking anything too complicated. And unfortunately, in Don Davis and in Roy Cooper, you've got two Democrats who have refused to fight for you every single step of the way. So, as we get down to the wire in this election, ladies and gentlemen, I just want to ask you a simple question -- are you ready to fight for the people who fight for you?

JD Vance 00:31:18-00:31:52 (33 sec)

Are you ready to tell Roy Cooper that he's not good enough? Are you ready to tell Don Davis that he's a far-left Democrat? Are we ready to send Laurie and Michael to fight for us in Washington? Then, ladies and gentlemen, get your friends, get your family. Remember who fights for you. Let's elect Laurie Buckhout and Michael Whatley, and let's keep on delivering for the American people.

JD Vance 00:31:52-00:32:00 (8 sec)

God bless you, North Carolina. We'll see you soon.
